Message from the Principal

Welcome to Southside Elementary School—home of the Mustangs! My name is Jeff Backmeyer and I am proud to be the principal here at Southside. From the outside, our historic 1969 school building may look a little cold, but step inside and you’ll find warmth, joy, and a school family unlike any other. With nearly 900 students and 27 languages spoken, Southside is a vibrant community where diversity isn’t just something we celebrate—it’s something that makes us stronger. Every day, our students learn from one another’s cultures, traditions, and stories, helping them become empathetic, open-minded learners and leaders.
Our building is also home to district programs like the elementary Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program and one of BCSC’s high-ability education sites. Our staff works tirelessly to meet students where they are, providing support, enrichment, and opportunities that help every child reach their personal best.
What makes me most proud is the heart of this school. At Southside, students aren’t mine or yours—they’re ours. Whether it’s cheering each other on during morning announcements, working together on academic and robotics teams, or joining our annual food drive to support families in need, our Mustangs show kindness, integrity, and respect every day. Even with our size, Southside feels like a family—one where teachers stay, friendships last, and students grow into remarkable young people who go on to do great things in middle school, high school, and beyond.
Southside is more than a school—it’s a community built on inclusivity, high expectations, and Mustang pride. And once you’re a Mustang… you’re always a Mustang."
Jeff Backmeyer,
Principal, Southside Elementary
